It's really hard, that role. I became step-dad to a four-year-old, although I never wanted the word 'dad' used. But it is a horrible tightrope, not replacing real dad, but still having to do the work, provide the unquestioning love, and take the responsibility. I tried my best, and they've grown up to be a wonderful person (although that's all them, not me!), so job done, hopefully.
